Congratulations Leigh Russell - Swimming Australia’s new CEO
One of the most important measures of the Sportspeople Recruitment business is the success of the candidates we place in jobs. It’s not just about filling the job of course; it’s really measured by the achievement of the key performance indicators set by the employer and of course, personal fulfilment of the employee. So it’s always pleasing to see Sportspeople Recruitment Alumni not only achieving great things for their employer but also see them acknowledged as industry leaders.
Sportspeople Recruitment Alumni continue to shine with Leigh Russell’s appointment as CEO Swimming Australia announced last week - https://bit.ly/2GUvG5a Leigh was appointed CEO Netball Victoria in 2009 in a selection process managed by Sportspeople Recruitment, and successfully held the position through to 2012.
A great appointment by the Swimming Australia Board and a great appointment for Australian sport.

Understanding the Rejection Cycle
When a candidate applies for a job they join a queue of other candidates competing for the same job. While it is somewhat a statement of the obvious it is important to remember the recruitment process is typically designed to arrive at just one appointment for every job advertised. If there are 80 applications for a job and only 1 successful appointment, this means 79 will be unsuccessful.
And of course, with more candidates than jobs it is inevitable even very capable, skilled and highly credentialed candidates will not be successful for every job which they apply.
A simple rule of thumb is the combination of a robust recruitment process, based on factors of merit, incorporating a structured interview protocol and solid background investigation, reference checking and pre-employment testing, will identify the most capable and suitable candidates.
Dealing with rejection is difficult for most people and that’s why employers need to regularly communicate with candidates throughout the recruitment process. Surveys by Sportspeople Recruitment have consistently shown candidates are more willing to accept they have been unsuccessful if they are advised in a courteous and timely manner and the recruitment has been against a specific job brief.
If you are an employer it is important to regularly communicate with the candidates and advise them as soon as possible when they have been unsuccessful. If you are a candidate it is equally important to understand you will not be successful for every job you apply and other candidates of merit are being considered alongside you every time you throw your hat in the ring.
