Stadia announcement widely criticised:

The announcement by the NSW Government that it will spend $2billion on the revamp of Allianz and ANZ Stadiums has been met with a tsunami of criticism. One particularly vocal critic is Peter FitzSimons (Sydney Morning Herald) labelling the decision a disgrace. There’s plenty of logic in his argument that 100 x $10 million projects might benefit a greater number of people in NSW just as others have suggested 2,000 x $1 million projects would go a long way to build capacity at community sport level. With 64% of our population considered overweight or obese (OECD Data 2017) Australia sits behind only the USA, Mexico, New Zealand and Hungary in a tally we’d rather not be world top 5. Sport can play an important role in reducing obesity levels, but it needs greater resources to build and deliver programs.  

There’s a lot of good to be done with two thousand million dollars and you just wonder whether it’s money well spent rebuilding two stadiums in Sydney. Makes you think doesn’t it?

Sport Management a true career path

Following highly successful terms as CEO Hockey Australia and more recently Swimming Australia, Mark Anderson’s appointment as CEO Collingwood is a great example of how a sport management professional can now shift from one sport to the next. 

However, it wasn’t that long ago an absence of a background as a player or official was considered a major roadblock for advancing in some of Australia’s most highly commercialised sports. When Sportspeople Recruitment launched in 1996 as Australia’s first specialist recruitment agency for the sport sector, the notion that sport management was a legitimate career path was relatively new. Over the past 20 years and the past decade in particular, there has been a changing of the guard with sport management professionals moving to positions of great influence in Australian Sport. Some of the obvious ones spring to mind like David Gallop, Raelene Castle, Alex Baumann, Michael Scott, Kitty Chiller, Todd Greenberg, Gillon McLachlan and Kate Palmer

This can only be a good thing for the future of sport management and there’s an abundance of talented, skilled and qualified professionals now with their feet well and truly under the desk, driving, building and leading sport from grass roots to international level. 

Internships are not free or cheap labour

For the past 10 years Sportspeople has provided free advertising for organisations to promote Volunteer and Internship roles. We would like to remind all advertisers of the Sportspeople Terms and Conditions as well as the provisions of the Fair Work Act as it relates to what constitutes work. Internships should not be used as a way to obtain free labour and if a work arrangement exists then the intern should receive payment for work completed. We monitor the internship listings as closely as possible and have in the past, asked advertisers to modify their listings where we feel there may be an abuse of the internship provisions. We also do not list commission only roles and we attempt to, as far as possible given the volume, ensure every advertisement is accurate, not misleading to job seekers and importantly does not disadvantage a job seeker should they accept a role.

If you are an employer the simple rule of thumb is treat them with respect and pay them when they are performing work for you.
