About the Organisation 

AusTriathlon (AusTri) is a not-for-profit organisation and the governing body for the sport of triathlon in Australia. AusTri is responsible for ensuring the success and sustainable future of triathlon and multisport, making the sport easier to access, more relevant and more rewarding for a diverse triathlon community. AusTri operates a unique operating model alongside recognised working behaviours across the state-based teams or STTAs. 

The AusTriathlon team is responsible for the delivery of triathlon and multisport disciplines across Australia.  Our team is aligned to our strategies which support the national Play Well and Win Well strategic plans. This role is connected across both participation and high-performance elements of the sport and works closely with event providers throughout Australia to assist in our vision to see 200,000 start lines annually. 

About the role

The National Events Manager plays a key role in the organisation supporting the network of race organisers and coordinating the key components of our sport’s connection to events. 

POSITION CAPABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following responsibilities are indicative requirements of the role and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all requirements:

  • National Calendar – develop and coordinate across the network of events to assist in critical conflicts, strategic approaches, and necessary scheduling matters related to individual events.
  • Australian Championships – working internally and externally to develop a suite of Australian Championships aligned to World Qualifying status and providing benefit to athletes and race organisers in both an enhanced experience and ease of integration to any existing events.
  • State Championship – coordinate internally and externally to deliver a calendar of races aligned to World Qualifier status and ensuring state-based relationships are respected and maintained.
  • Race Director Relations -- enhance the critical relationships across the network of race organisers, including regular touchpoints, a deep understanding of the needs of events, and face to face summits from time to time
  • Race/ event communications – assisting in the planning of the communication and marketing plans for events across Australia and championing the visibility of events to ensure we are impacting our goals of 200,000 start lines annually. 
  • Domestic Race Series planning – work in conjunction with the HP team, race directors, and international level races to consider elite and age group race options that can enhance race opportunities in Australia with broadcast potential.
  • Elite and high-performance domestic planning – annually plan the race calendar related to Oceania, World Triathlon, Elite Championships, and any race opportunities aligned with the pathway to the Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, or World Championships.
  • International event sourcing and planning – working with existing and prospective international event delivery options to ensure a continuity of World Triathlon aligned events and other international race opportunities to enhance the Australian triathlon community.
  • AusTriathlon Owned events strategy and operational management – assist our state-based team in the strategic planning and operational preparation for any AusTri owned event delivery, including outsourcing considerations to ensure there are clear access opportunities to participate in triathlon across the country.
  • Development of policy, practices, and guidelines in relation to event delivery to ensure a safe and fair network of events within Australia. This includes the critical working relationship with the Technical Official team, communication or race rules and ensuring a strong cultural sport alignment between race directors and technical officials. 
  • Advocacy and planning on behalf of the triathlon and multisport industry – stakeholder relationships across federal, state, and local agencies, suppliers, and other key aspects of the sport that will positively impact the sustainability of the sport. 

KPIs

The following measures of success are designed to ensure that the Events space is operating efficiently and effectively, and the Events Team is delivering on key priorities in support of AusTri’s strategic plan. Specific measures of success will include:

  • A prepared, communicated, and coordinated calendar of events with high engagement from race organisers, government agencies, and athletes, coaches, and clubs.
  • High level race director engagement and satisfaction. 
  • Safe and fair events with up-to-date guidelines, rules, and practices.
  • Critical working relationship with all aspects of technical officiating and engagement at national technical meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A demonstrated practical understanding of event management processes. 
  • Tertiary qualifications in Sports Management, a related field or equivalent experience preferred.  
  • At least 3 years of demonstrated experience in related role/s.
  • Demonstrated success at managing operational and financial aspects of a program. 
  • (desired) Experience working with national/international governing bodies and major funding partners. 
  • (desired) Experience with major national and international events. 
  • Working with Children Clearance and Police Checks.
  • Awareness of, and ability to work in accordance with AusTriathlon’s Safeguarding and Children and Young People policies.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS          

  • Consistent adherence to all obligations and legislative requirements regarding Child Safety, Working with Children and Sport Integrity. AusTri is committed to protecting Children from harm. We require all applicants that will work with Children to undergo an extensive screening process prior to appointment. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with Children/Young People. 
  • You must be an Australian/New Zealand citizen or hold permanent residency, or right to work in Australia. 
  • Flexibility to work outside normal business hours, including weekends and evenings, to attend events and meet organisational needs. 
  • Strong understanding of the Australian sporting landscape and regulatory environment.
