Let's be real...
This isn't a sit at your desk and flick through emails kind of job.
It's hands on, event focused and people powered. You'll be in the middle of the action making things happen, keeping things moving, solving problems as they pop up and yes, probably asking, "Where are the multitimers?" more than once.
But here's the other truth.
Behind every smooth event is someone who has done the work well before the first starter says set. Someone who has checked the start lists twice. Someone who has confirmed the venue booking, the equipment delivery, the officials roster and the contingency plan. Someone who communicates clearly, follows through and owns their patch.
That's the person we're looking for.
We're Capital Athletics, the peak body for athletics in the ACT and surrounds. We're building something special by creating genuine opportunities for athletes of all ages and backgrounds and delivering competitions that matter.
We're a small, committed team based at the University of Canberra. We keep things relaxed in tone, but we take our work seriously. We back each other. We hold ourselves accountable. We care about getting it right. Right now, we're looking for a Competition Coordinator to help bring our event calendar to life.
So, what's the job?
It's a big one but a good one.
You'll help run the Capital Athletics competition calendar including meets, championships and school carnivals from grassroots through to elite. You'll plan, prepare, deliver and refine.
A big part of your role happens well before the first race is called to the line. You'll be the one making sure the detail is sorted so event day feels sharp, not scrambled. That includes
- Setting up competition portals accurately and on time so entries, start lists and timetables stack up
- Communicating clearly with clubs, schools and athletes so no one is left guessing about nominations, event times or requirements
- Locking in venues and working closely with venue operators and suppliers so the track, field and equipment are ready to go
- Organising officials and volunteers with clear rosters and expectations so every event has the right people in the right place
- Confirming logistics, equipment and contingency plans well before the first athlete steps onto the track
- Being on the ground at meets and carnivals, knowing that calm delivery is the outcome of thorough preparation
If you get a quiet sense of satisfaction from seeing a well built timetable run to plan and a finish line team that knows exactly what they are doing, you'll enjoy this role.
You'll also support schools in delivering athletics carnivals and help students experience the sport at its best. For many, it's their first taste of organised athletics. That experience reflects on us.
A bit about you...
You don't need a sports science degree or a shelf full of medals. You do need:
- Exceptional organisational skills and genuine attention to detail
- A strong sense of accountability and follow through
- Clear, confident written communication
- Calm, direct verbal communication under pressure
- The ability to manage competing priorities without dropping the ball
- Confidence to set boundaries and manage expectations professionally
- A willingness to learn from experienced volunteers and stakeholders
- Experience in sport, events or logistics whether paid or volunteer
You take pride in being prepared. You like structure. You understand that good systems create good events. You're comfortable being the person who checks, confirms and clarifies.
This role could suit someone bringing strong life experience into sport. A parent with older kids. A new graduate who thrives on responsibility. A current or former athlete. Someone from events, logistics or operations who wants to apply their skills in a meaningful environment.
Important to note:
This is not a remote role. You'll need to be Canberra based and present at events.
We're open to different structures including part time, job share and flexible arrangements if the capability and fit are right.
There is regular weekend work during the competition season. That's when our sport comes to life. During this period your working week will shift to align with events, which means it will not always follow a traditional Monday to Friday pattern. Weekdays will adjust accordingly to ensure balance, with quieter periods providing space for planning, review and preparation.
We operate a proper time in lieu system to ensure weekend and extended hours are recognised and balanced appropriately.
Why you'll love working with us:
- Real impact - You'll see the results of your work every single day
- Supportive team - We look out for each other and keep egos in check
- No office politics - Just good people doing good work
- Purposeful sport - We're here to create something awesome, not just keep the lights on
