Short DescriptionThe Northern Territory Rugby Union Board invites applications for the role of Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation's efforts to develop and grow our game through the successful management of our staff, finances and stakeholders.

The successful application will have excellent communication and leadership skills, a demonstrated understanding of the operations of a sporting organisation and an ability to deliver the strategic goals of NT Rugby.

Detailed Description

Purpose of Role

  • To plan, develop, implement and manage strategies to progress the Northern Territory Rugby Union

Key Areas of Responsibility

People Management

  • Provide leadership by example and play the key role in providing guidance and mentoring to NT Rugby staff, be up-to-date on the activities of the team
  • Foster a working environment that inspires the team to succeed. Motivate and manage to ensure a committed and professional team
  • Communicate the NT Rugby Union objectives, attend and where appropriate lead information sessions. Effectively ‘add value’ when disseminating the output
  • Provide appropriate timely performance feedback to employees (critically constructive both positive & negative)
  • Responsible for all people management activities, including employee development and morale, recruitment and separations for NT Rugby organisation


  • Manage the strategic planning of the NT Rugby Union, look for options to create new opportunities, develop and improve the profile of Rugby in the region and to generate revenue to grow
  • Work with Executive & Rugby Australia to develop an ongoing development plan for the growth of Rugby Union in the Northern Territory
  • Work to maintain productive, progressive and harmonious relationships with other State Unions, Rugby Australia and international bodies
  • Lead activities to implement a process of change in NT Rugby work with other stakeholders to assess the merits of recommendations and effectively implement any approved changes

Financial / Business Operations

  • In association with the Executive Board, develop, recommend and implement annual business plans and budgets and enhance and maintain appropriate financial controls, statutory reporting, risk management and related programs to ensure efficient management of NT Rugby’s financial affairs
  • Proactively use the information to determine financial position of NT Rugby i.e. manage and monitor budget by tracking and approving expenditures (within delegated authority), control costs, validate expenses and anticipate and correct forecasting errors


  • Manage and supervise the development and implementation of marketing, promotional and activities to promote player participation and spectator interest in NT Rugby Union


  • Manage and supervise all activities to evaluate and negotiate commercial opportunities including sponsorship and licensing opportunities, to strengthen and diversify NT Rugby’s revenue base
  • Manage and maintain current Government relationships developing ongoing commercially successful partnerships

Operations Event Management

  • Manage the regional and international competition events held within Northern Territory e.g. Hottest Sevens in the World and NT Country Championships
  • Constructively work with partners including Government to maximise the outcomes and returns of the Hottest Sevens Tournament
  • Explore and develop other similar events to enhance commercial returns and overall improve the development of the game in the Northern Territory
  • Ensure event operational procedures are consistent and comply with prevailing Rugby Australia standards and guidelines

Community Rugby

  • Oversee the operation of Rugby Australia Community Rugby programs aimed at recruitment, retention, development, education (coaches and match officials) and Governance
  • Oversee the annual management and administration of the senior and junior club competitions principally in Darwin but also in other areas of the NT
  • Provide the required infrastructure in NT Rugby to assist Rugby Australia to ensure the amateur rugby environment is safe and enjoyable


  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven experience in managing staff
  • Excellent negotiation skills. Ability to resolve issues internally and externally at executive level
  • Ability to plan and conduct negotiations reaching agreements and commitment
  • Ability to build successful partnerships and maintain and improve relationships particularly with Commercial Partners and Government
  • Strong communication skills, written & verbal ability to develop and deliver presentations on operational and strategy direction
  • Disciplined Budget management with previous experience in managing a budget in excess of $1 Million
  • Working knowledge of Australian Rugby standards, expectations and opportunities
  • Self-starter with proactive attitude
  • Membership of appropriate Commercial/Industry bodies
  • Relationships with commercial and Government representatives at a senior level


  • Tertiary degree in business discipline or equivalent experience as an advantage
  • Previous management experience preferably in sporting / entertainment industry
