Lead. Inspire. Grow the Game.
Cairns Basketball is seeking an experienced, energetic and highly motivated General Manager to lead the organisation into its next phase of growth. This is an exciting opportunity for a strong person and business leader who is passionate about community sport and understands the important role a successful sporting organisation plays in bringing people together.
Reporting to the Cairns Basketball Management Committee, the General Manager will provide leadership across the organisation and take responsibility for the effective day-to-day management of Cairns Basketball. A key focus will be growing basketball participation and membership across the Cairns region, while ensuring the organisation has the people, systems, partnerships and financial foundations required for sustainable long-term growth.
Drive Growth. Build Community. Lead Basketball.
As General Manager, you will work closely with the Management Committee, staff, players, coaches, officials, volunteers, members, families, sponsors and key stakeholders. You will provide visible and positive leadership while balancing the commercial, operational and community responsibilities of a busy sporting organisation.
We are looking for someone who can think strategically, build strong relationships and deliver results, while also being comfortable working hands-on with the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive strategies to increase participation, membership and engagement across junior, senior and community basketball.
- Provide strong leadership, direction and support to staff and volunteers.
- Manage the day-to-day operations and administration of Cairns Basketball.
- Work with the Management Committee to implement strategic priorities and organisational objectives.
- Maintain sound financial management, budgeting, reporting and financial controls.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen and diversify revenue.
- Build productive relationships with sponsors, government, Basketball Queensland, Basketball Australia, schools, community organisations and other key stakeholders.
- Support the delivery and continued development of domestic competitions, representative programs, events and basketball pathways.
- Develop commercial partnerships, sponsorship opportunities and community relationships.
- Ensure effective governance, risk management, compliance and workplace practices.
- Oversee facilities, systems, policies and operational processes.
- Promote a positive, professional and inclusive organisational culture.
- Represent Cairns Basketball professionally throughout the Cairns community and wider basketball network.
- Identify new opportunities to grow the profile and reach of basketball throughout the region.
Inspire People. Grow Participation. Shape the Future.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader who can bring people together and turn opportunities into results.
- Proven leadership and management experience, preferably within sport, a membership-based organisation, not-for-profit organisation, business or a similarly complex environment.
- Strong people-management skills and the ability to build a positive and accountable team culture.
- Demonstrated experience in business planning, budgeting and financial management.
- A track record of achieving organisational growth and improving participation, membership, customer engagement or commercial performance.
- Strong stakeholder-management and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a volunteer Management Committee.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to identify sponsorship, partnership and revenue opportunities.
- Sound judgement, integrity and a professional approach to leadership.
- A genuine commitment to community sport and creating positive experiences for participants, families, volunteers and stakeholders.
Experience within basketball or the sporting sector would be highly regarded; however, it is not essential. We are equally interested in outstanding leaders from other sectors who can bring strong management, commercial and people skills to Cairns Basketball.
Lead Today. Build Tomorrow. Grow Basketball.
Success in this role means growing participation and membership, strengthening competitions and programs, supporting our people, building strong partnerships, improving commercial sustainability and creating an organisation that the Cairns basketball community is proud to be part of.
Your Leadership. Our Community. The Future of Basketball.
This is more than an administration position. It is an opportunity to lead an organisation with an important place in the Cairns sporting community and to make a genuine difference to basketball in Far North Queensland.
You will have the opportunity to work with passionate people, develop new partnerships, strengthen existing programs and help shape the future direction of basketball in the region.
